Bring your daughter, bring your mother, bring your aunt, bring your best friend or come alone and let’s celebrate together the historic decision to include women in the legal definition of ‘persons’!

October 18 is Persons Day in Canada. And October 18, 2024 marks 95 years. On Persons Day, we honour the bravery and determination of the Famous Five (Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards) whose landmark case helped pave the way for women* to participate equally in all aspects of life in Canada. We also honour all those whose work in the years since then has expanded and strengthened those rights.

We will celebrate with a day-long Pink Tea. Historically gatherings known as Pink Teas were occasions for women to organize and strategize in their pursuit of women’s rights.  A pink tea offered the disguise of a frivolous social affair that men avoided so these teas provided an occasion women to have courageous conversations.

In the morning, we welcome you to simply come and enjoy the company of other women around tea and treats. Or dress as a woman you admire. Or bring your embroidery or knitting or felting or beading or table top game and engage in some craftivism: the activity of using crafts (= sewing or making things yourself using your hands) often used as a cover to achieve political or social change.

*We also recognize this decision 95 years ago did not include all women, such as Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent so we heartily open the library pink tea to ALL women or female-identifying persons!
